Tougan (ceramic spherical ball)

marusankakusikaku

A ceramic sphere about 18 mm in diameter. It was excavated around the Nagakute ancient battlefield in Aichi Prefecture, and many of its fused pieces have been found at old kiln sites in Seto. During the wars of Genki and Tensho (1570-92), the production of guns was still in its infancy and iron bullets were scarce, so ceramic bullets were probably made. This is a very interesting fact. Therefore, it cannot be said that Nobunaga, Hideyoshi and others paid special attention to Seto only for the protection of its industry or tea ceremony utensils. In contrast to the above theory, there is an objection that this ball round is not a gun round but a bullet from a bullet bow. However, ceramic rounds have also been excavated from the late Kamakura period (1185-1333) kiln sites in the Ko-Joname kiln site. It does not seem to be possible to say that they are bullet rounds or bullets from a bullet bow.
