Ceramicist. Born in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University. Although he himself was an outstanding collector of Chinese ceramics, he also made groundbreaking contributions to the study of ceramics from the standpoint of a professional scientist, making full use of rational methods of elucidation. His book, “The Science of Old Ceramics,” is a must-read for those new to this field.
