Bakouhan (horsehair locust bond)

Bakouhan (horsehair locust bond)

Specialty. A celadon tea bowl from China. Ito Togai’s “Bakohan chasutsu tsutsuna ki” says, “Bind it with iron nails and six bells, and the binding is just like locusts. It is said, “I remember that it has a taste when I return to it, so I call it ‘horse locust bond tea kasugai'”. The locusts are made of iron. According to the chronicle of Togai, this tea bowl was given to Taira Shigemori by Zenji Butsusho, the abbot of the time, as a gift in return for the gold he had given away to Ikuo Mountain in the Song Dynasty. Later, Ashikaga Yoshimasa highly valued it and sent it to Ming China to replace a broken bottom with another of the same kind, but even in Ming China, it was difficult to find such a famous piece again, so a tie was placed on the crack, which added even more charm. Later, Yoshimasa gave it to his vassal Yoshida Sorin. The descendants of Sorin are the Kadokura family, famous for their civil engineering work. In 1727 (Kyoho 12), when Sorin’s ninth grandson Genkai was born, Toga saw this at his home and wrote an impressive note. In 1727, during the reign of Rin-ninth grandson Genkai, Togai saw it at the house and wrote an impressive note. (Taisho Meikikan)
