Maki-neri (kneading by rolling)

marusankakusikaku

As soon as rough kneading is completed, maki neri is performed to start shaping. Maki-neeri is a method of kneading clay to remove air from the kneaded clay. The right hand presses down on the clay as if to turn it, and the left hand lifts it up while turning it, and kneads it in a rhythmic motion simultaneously on both sides. The right hand is used to softly and strongly rotate and press the dough to release the air. The viscosity of the clay is further increased by the rolling and kneading. After the kneading is completed, the clay is ready for molding.
