Motoyashiki-gama

An old kiln in Kusiri, Izumi-cho, Toki-shi, Gifu Prefecture. The kiln site is located on a hillside above a stream in front of Seianji Temple in the same area. It is commonly referred to as the Chikugomori mansion site, and produced Tenmoku glaze, Kizeto, Setoguro, Shino ware, Oribe, and other types of pottery. Oribe ware is particularly outstanding. When we consider the kiln style, the kilns that had been scattered and moved around in the Kugari area of today’s Kani Town, Kani County, were all built on the slopes of mountain tops or hillsides, and were of the ground-hole type. The Motoyashiki kiln was built by Chikugomori Kagenobu in the style of Karatsu kilns, and Oribe ware is estimated to have originated in this period, and gradually spread throughout the Owari and Mino areas.
