This tea bowl once belonged to Fumai Matsudaira, and “Sanbaso i” is written in vermilion lacquer on the side of the base, and Fumai wrote his Hanaseki (flower stamp) on it. This type of Seto black tea bowl can be seen in many places. However, the style is somewhat different from those of the early Momoyama period. In particular, the clay taste is quite hard. When and where were they fired in the Momoyama period? It is difficult to determine from the pottery shards excavated from the kiln site. Although at first glance it appears to be a straightforward piece, we believe that there is something quite artificial about it, or that it was made at some point in time under the concept of Setoguro, a formalized style of pottery with a small, low base and a strong, firm body. However, the date of manufacture remains to be determined.
