Oribe works sometimes show a wooden rabbit on an incense burner or an incense container. However, there is no other small and lovely vessel like this one. The body and lid are separated at the neck of the owl, and the beak, eyes, ears, and feathers are painted with ochre and iron pigments on a white base, with a thin feldspar glaze applied over the top. Only the mating mouth is glazed with clay, but both the lid and body are glazed to the inside. The oval bottom is flat and has five marks.
This incense container was once in the possession of the Konoe family of Yorakuin, and is mentioned in the “Keiki” on November 13, Kyoho 13. The inner box is inscribed “Mimitsuku Kabako, owned by Yuraku” and the outer box is inscribed “Owned by Oda Yurakusai,” also by Yurakuin. Since it is said to be in the possession of Yurakusai, it must have been fired during the Keicho and Genna periods. It is believed to have been made at the Yashichida Kiln in Ohgaya.
