Height 4.9 cm, mouth diameter 3.9 x 3.9 cm, four legs.
This is a plump, four-legged, four-sided, four-footed incense container with a stroked top and softly fired finish. The sides of the body and lid are decorated on two sides with iron paintings of a mamidou and a stone pavement design, and on the other two sides with scraped off iron glaze showing a white pattern of flowers and plum trees. Although it is a small incense container, it is a multi-skilled work that shows the potter’s enthusiasm for decorating. The fact that Keicho did not use this technique as a distraction is what makes this piece so unique. The bottom and feet are covered with soft grayish-brown clay. This type of hand-formed incense container is commonly referred to as “Hajiki Kogai.
