This octagonal bowl with a low, raised mouth rim is covered with iron rust and has a rouge rim. The sword-shaped open mouth is decorated with arabesques and each of the octagonal corners is decorated with a small floral motif. The design, which depicts two chestnuts with two birds and a bush clover on the left, is done in a rather delicate brushwork on a pure white base, but the painterly composition has Kakiemon’s unique elegance. The outer surface is plain white, and there are three marks within the base. There are quite a few octagonal bowls of this type remaining, but this is the most valuable of them all.
