Many of the designs created by the Nabeshima domain kilns show a stylish Japanese sentiment, reflecting the tastes of the Genroku era (1688-1704). Among them, the braided cord design with the overlay is particularly outstanding, and is highly praised as the best of all the Nabeshima seven-sun plates in overglaze enamels. Although the color scheme is bland because it uses only two colors, underglaze blue and red, the arrangement of the four braided cords with the “so” pattern was not created in a single morning, but must have been thoughtfully planned and executed so well that it creates a sense of tension. The back of the plate is decorated on three sides with a cloisonne pattern, which is typical of seven-sun plates, and the base is also covered with a comb pattern.
