This square bowl features an outward-curving rim and a square footring. The interior bottom of the bowl and the inside of the footring are decorated with blue-and-white porcelain, while the rest of the piece is finished in a red ground with gold Kiran-de decoration. The interior bottom is decorated with blue-and-white designs of grass patterns, a sun disc, and two cranes, while the interior and exterior surfaces feature patterns in gold on a deep red ground. The interior sides each depict fish motifs within flames, while the two exterior sides feature dragons and the other two feature phoenixes, all set within flames; both the interior and exterior grounds are filled with thick arabesque patterns. Inside the foot rim, a double-circled border encircles the text “Made by Eiraku of Great Japan,” written in two lines. On the front of the lid of the accompanying box is inscribed “Gold-decorated Masu Bowl,” and on the underside of the lid is inscribed “Made by Zenichiro.”
