This is a generously sized tea bowl, resembling a flat tea bowl, with pronounced undulations at the rim and a rounded midsection. The bowl is thickly constructed overall, with a wide interior and a small foot attached to the rounded bottom. The indentation inside the foot is minimal, while the base is flat and wide; the exterior features a flat, tapered edge to add variation. The thick glaze applied over the entire surface melts smoothly, though some yellowing is visible on parts of the exterior. A central seal is clearly stamped on the side of the foot, and three kiln marks remain.
This tea bowl forms a pair with the red flat tea bowl shown in Figure 151. The inscription “Shukōsai” is written on the underside of the inner box lid, while “Rokurokusai” is inscribed on the lid’s exterior; the lid of a matching box by Ryōnyū is used for the box’s base. It is believed to have been made during the late Chūin period, that is, around the time just before his retirement.
