Compared to the youthful-looking black shimenawa-decorated tea bowls, this bowl, stamped with the “Inkō” seal, is a robustly crafted piece. It features a semi-cylindrical form with a tapered body and a strongly flared lower section; the foot is flat and stepped, and the carving inside the foot is smooth. White clay is exposed on the foot and its sides, while the rest is covered with a thick layer of well-fused black glaze. On one side of the body, two young pine trees are carved into the unglazed clay; on the other side, a single tree is carved. The black glaze has been removed from these carved areas, and a thin layer of iron glaze has been applied instead. The “Inkyo” seal is stamped inside the foot. The lid’s exterior is inscribed with “Matsu-no-e Kuro Chawan, Rakuryo-in,” and the underside of the lid bears an authentication inscription by Myosai.
