Keinyū: shallow tea bowl, known as “Koke-shimizu”, Black Raku

Height: 5.5 cm, Mouth Diameter: 12.5 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.8 cm
This is a flat tea bowl with a wide interior and a rounded body. The foot is low and large, with a wide base; a subtle kabuto-kin (helmet-shaped) design is carved into the interior of the foot.
The black glaze is applied generously, revealing wavy glaze cracks around the foot rim, and there are several scattered patches of yellow glaze wear on the interior and exterior. The interior and exterior of the foot rim are left unglazed to reveal the clay, and a maker’s mark is stamped in the center of the foot rim’s interior. On the outside of the box lid, Kei-nyu has inscribed “Black Flat Tea Bowl, Raku ‘Kichizaemon’,” and on the inside of the lid, Sokuchu-sai has written “Kei-nyu Black Flat, Inscription: Moss Clear Water, Left (Seal).”
