Ōhi VI: cylindrical tea bowl, Black Raku

Ōhi VI: cylindrical tea bowl, Black Raku
Ōhi VI: cylindrical tea bowl, Black Raku

Height: 8.5 cm, Mouth Diameter: 8.1 cm, Foot Diameter: 3.8 cm
This piece was created by Ōhi Chōzaemon (6th Generation). It has a cylindrical shape with a slightly tapered body and a small, compact foot, on which a “tombi” (a traditional Japanese headscarf) is placed. The body features comb-like marks forming wind patterns and diagonal lines. The black glaze, which covers the entire surface and has a slightly amber hue, reveals vivid areas of unglazed clay in places. It is likely a deep amber glaze rather than a typical black Raku glaze. The lid of the inner box bears the inscription “Red Tea Bowl, Ōhi Chōzaemon Seal,” indicating that this is the original box accompanying the work of Ōhi VI.
