Excavated from Chuo Dorayama Kiln, Higashimachi, Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
13th century
Height (present) 12.0kcm
This is the oldest known guardian dog from Koseto. It is a small-bodied guardian dog, and is missing its right forelimb and face, so it is unclear whether it is an Amuizure. The “A” is represented by pasting clay cords and sunken lines. The slender body suggests that this is a Yamadai. As is well known, a base from the Kamakura period was found at Sakari Seat with the inscription “1324” (1324), and fragments were also excavated from the Magoemon kiln, both of which were ash-glazed. The latter is a fragment, but when restored, it appears to be over 20 cm in length. The guardian dogs shown in the figure are thought to date from the late 13th century.
