Chuko specialty. Takatori-ware tea caddy. This inscription, which is based on a poem from “Ise Monogatari” (“The Tale of Ise”), means “A Thousand Autumn Nights in a Single Night,” and praises the never-ending delicacy of the tea. The two opposing tozan-shaped vessels are covered with a trickle of dark glaze from one side and a trickle of ame-iro glaze on the other side, while the body is entirely covered with a pear-skin-colored glaze, giving the vessels a very calm appearance. Originally owned by Sadomori Ogasawara, it later passed to the Kuroda family, then to Denzaburo Fujita in Osaka, and finally to Seigai Inoue, and was sold for 21,000 yen together with a Somegawa of the same hand when the family sold it in 1925. (Kokin Meibutsu Ruiju, Taisho Meikikan)
