This short-necked jar is typical of the late Heian period and was fired in various regions in the Tokai region. The base is made of coarse clay rich in sand. The surface of the vessel is marked on all sides with a latticework for pounding, and the bottom of the body is adjusted by using a sinew in a vertical line. The surface is black from the smoked reduction firing and the ash glaze is cobalt colored in places, making this an unusual pot with kiln variations.
