Utsubo katatsuki (shoulder impulse)

Utsubo katatsuki

A great masterpiece. This is a tea caddy by Han. This tea caddy was so named because of its similarity in shape. It is one of the finest of the Han-saku katatsuki tea caddies, with a particularly interesting blue lapis lazuli color. It was owned by Ashikaga Yoshimasa and passed down through Masamoto, son of Hosokawa Katsumoto, to his nephew Takanuni, and was presented to Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the reign of Tadaoki. It was then passed on to Kinoshita Chohkoko and Tsutsumi Ohsetsu, and in 1673, the Tsutsumi family presented it to Mitsutomo, the second lord of the Owari domain, and it has been in the same family ever since. It is now in the collection of the Tokugawa Reimeikai. (Taisho Meikikan)
