There is some debate as to whether this is a successor to the wide-mouthed vase, a type of Sue ware of the Heian period, or whether it was influenced by Kosedo vases. It is made of a rather coarse clay rich in grains of sand, and after being rolled up and beaten, the surface of the vessel was adjusted by rough shaving. The thick neck, strong shoulders, and small base with a high pedestal indicate that it was made in the mid Kamakura period (1185-1333). Although the ware is a little under-fired, the jet-black color tone of the skin suggests that this is a piece from the period when the color black was most emphasized in Suzu ware. This is a representative piece of Suzu ware full of power and vigor.
