Shigaraki has two types of clay: white clay and black clay, or clay with high iron content. In particular, many of the 15th- and 16th-century wares north of the Imperial Palace were made of this black clay.
They are characterized by round shoulders and generally large bases. The clay is rolled up and the surface of the vessel is ground and shaped. The blackish-purple smooth surface is covered with a yellowish-brown natural glaze.
