Excavated from an old kiln at Nakai, Miyamachi, Shigaraki Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
16th century
Height 8.6cm, Bowl diameter 19.5-20.2cm, Bottom diameter 9.4cm
Shigaraki Town Hall
Two types of suribachi, large and small, were found in the kiln, and this is a small suribachi.
It was fired very hard with coarse clay, and part of the rim is cracked. The edge of the mouth is slightly curved and has a small edge that has been pressed down with a fingertip. The inside surface is densely grated with a five-finger comb, and the fact that it is grated all the way to the bottom is probably a late Muromachi period technique.
