Flower vase with handles, E-garatsu type

Flower vase with handles, E-garatsu type

Height 25.3 cm, mouth diameter 9.4 x 11.5 cm, left and right sides 15.6 cm, bottom diameter 9.5 x 12.5 cm
This vase has a distorted mouth, a stepped body with a narrow base, and large ears on the left and right sides, and is of rather contrived workmanship. It is a characteristic of ekaratsu to depict natural scenes symbolically with simple expressions, but the combination of Joseon techniques and a taste for Japanese styles gives it a different flavor from Mino ceramics, even though they are the same painted ceramics. The potter’s vase was once used as a hanging flower vase, so the front and back of the vase still bear the marks of the potter’s wheel, and the soft red clay skin is visible on the bottom. There is one other similar example known, both of which are thought to have been fired in the Fujinokawauchi kiln.
