Height 9.4 cm, mouth diameter 4.4 cm, bottom diameter 6.3 cm
Omotesenke
This is a large, stout tea caddy with a low square ball-rimmed rim and stooped shoulders. The front has a ladder design carved in lines, and the back has the same poorly executed line carving pattern in three places. On the front of the lid of the box, Sotan inscribed “Daifuku, from the former Iga Honpoji Chizon” and on the back of the middle box, “Shigaraki tea caddy Daifuku, in possession of Sotan’s disciple Honpoji Chizon, left (hanasho),” by Omotesenke 6th generation Kakuzusai Haraso. It is interesting to note that the inscription “Old Iga” is written on the front, which may mean that this is an old Iga. It was probably made in the Momoyama period. It is customary to use this tea caddy for the first tea ceremony every year at Fushin’an. It is one of the outstanding Shigaraki tea caddies.
