This type of Tokutaru, with a clear vertical line pattern on the body, was produced for a time at the Hyakuma Kiln in Arita.
Influenced by Li dynasty underglaze blue and white porcelain, this type of Tokutaru was produced at the Hyakuma kiln in Arita for a period of time, and shows a unique originality.
Most of this type of underglaze blue ware is small in size, but this is a rare large piece, and is considered to be the best of its kind.
The body is decorated with two vertical lines on each of the eight sides, and four types of flowers (trees, vines, chrysanthemums, and grasses) are depicted on the four sides in dark colors using high-quality cobalt.
The white glazed base has a beautiful white porcelain body with a slight bluish tinge, showing that the underglaze blue ware of the Hyakumen kiln was as high quality as that of the early Ming and Li dynasties.
The slightly high, ridge-topped shoulder and the slightly high base of the vessel are well balanced, and the bulge is firm and strong.
It was probably made before the Kan’ei period.
