Various types of four-sided square tokkuri were actively produced in Arita from around the Kanbun period.
Some were for export to the Netherlands, while others were for domestic use.
Among them, this square-shaped tokutte is a very attractive example of Japanese Iroe (color painting).
It is molded in the shape of a pine tree, with a small spout in one corner and a square stopper in the other.
The top and body were fired with iron and white glazes applied diagonally to the four sides of the body, and then red, green, and purple overglaze glazes were applied to the white ground to form a diagonal line pattern.
The colors of white, red, green, and purple are well reflected in the invitation, creating a simple yet very effective design.
The bottom of the bowl has a reddish skin with a slightly raised center, and there are traces of the cap cloth from the molding process.
