Hakone Art Museum Since ancient times, among the pots called Ko-Imari type in Japan, Dokuraku type pots with a five-armed boat design have been particularly valuable.
However, there are very few surviving pieces.
The name “five-person boat” is derived from the five Dutch boats, three on the prospective side and two on the outer side, which form the subject of the composition of this work.
The red, black, green, purple, and gold colors are added, and almost the entire surface is decorated with underglaze blue and overglaze enamels.
In addition, the arabesque peony design on the outside of the bowl, which is painted in a vivid manner in underglaze blue, red and gold, is quite old and shows its antiquity.
There are three marks in the base, and the center of the bowl has a “Kotobuki” (longevity) motif in gold framed in red.
The gilding around the mouth rim has almost completely fallen off.
The five-part ship pattern was a unique pattern created through trade with the Netherlands in the 17th century, but it may have been a special product for the domestic market rather than for export.
