A pottery shard of this type of Tokutoshi (Japanese drinking vessel), with two thick lines of Tsuisen patterns around the body and a design of folded branches and arabesque patterns in between, was excavated from the Hyakumon Kiln. It was once thought to be a Yi Dynasty blue-and-white ware, but since the pottery shards were excavated from the Hyakumon kiln, it has been determined that it is an early Imari blue-and-white ware. It was probably fired during the Kan’ei period. The area from the base to the bottom of the bowl shows the rough penetration characteristic of early Imari wares. The color of the underglaze blue is dark, and fine quality gozu (mineral pigment) is used.
