This 7″ dish has a flat tan rim. The rim is covered with a petal design in fine lines on a beautifully colored underglaze blue ground, and the prospective viewer can see a kind of arabesque design with peonies in the style of helmet-shaped flowers placed in a window on all five sides. This type of peony arabesque is a representative pattern of the arabesque style of nabeshima in overglaze enamels, and is often used in a variety of variations. This is a particularly beautiful example of both underglaze and inlaid Nabeshima ware, boasting a pattern composition and coloring that is unique to this type of work. The outer three sides are decorated with cloisonne enamel designs, and the base is a comb-shaped base.
