Cup with peach blossom design. enamelled ware

Height 3.7 cm, mouth diameter 8.2 x 8.0 cm, high stand diameter 3.2 cm
Although this is a small piece, it is one of the representative works of the Okawachi domain kilns. It is a beautiful work reminiscent of Ming-era Seika mousai cups. The peach petals are painted in light red, and the stamens are gilded. The outer surface is decorated with the character for “Kotobuki” (longevity) in underglaze blue, and the low base is covered with two lines in underglaze blue. The peach branches in relief are also interesting. Peaches were appreciated as a sacred fruit and were used in sake cups to wish for long life, and may have been a favorite of the feudal lord.
This is a rare masterpiece of Japanese overglaze porcelain, and could only have been produced by the Nabeshima domain kilns.
