This is a typical example of an inlaid medium dish in the so-called Kogutani style with a twisted rim. Most of the medium-sized plates are circular or have twisted edges, but this piece is unusually hexagonal with an inset corner, and has been handed down through the ages. The white porcelain surface is smooth and elegant, a characteristic of the Ko-Kutani style of the finished period. Two quails are depicted in red on the front, and a grass pattern is decorated on the side. The composition, which is conscious of the ample white margin, is in the style of the Tosa school. The sides are covered with a lightning pattern and covered with yellow overglaze enamels. The base is circular and inscribed in the center with the character “Fuku” (福).
