Gourd-shaped wine bottles

Gourd-shaped wine bottles with design of chintz-style patterns, enamelled ware

Among the Ko-Kutani style pieces, one of the most popular among tea ceremony masters is the gourd-shaped tokkuri, which is suitable for kaiseki in the tea room. This is probably because the gourd-shaped Tokuturi is appropriate for kaiseki in the tea ceremony room, and its elegant coloring blends well in the austere surroundings of a tea ceremony room. There are three types of gourd-shaped tokuri, including round, twisted, and octagonal, with the most highly regarded being those that show twisted patterns on twisted flowers. This type is modeled after the Shozui Hyougo Tokutoshi (gourd-shaped sake cup), but has an overglaze enamels design with red as the main color. The gourd-shaped tokuri with a design of a gibbous shape in overglaze enamels is a representative example of an octagonal chamotori gourd-shaped tokuri. The gourd-shaped Tokutoshi with Sakuragawa twist design in overglaze enamels has Sakuragawa, Karakusa, Kagome, and Sayagata patterns on the twist motifs, and is the most lustrous among these types of Tokutoshi. The gourd-shaped sake cup with twin bird motifs in overglaze enamels has twin birds on two sides and a landscape design on the other two sides, while the other sides are filled with a gauze pattern and a cloisonne design. The gourd-shaped Tokutari with a grapevine roundel design in overglaze enamels is decorated with Shozui-style roundels on the upper and lower sides without using underglaze blue, and the lower roundel has a peony, peony, and tiger design on a Chinese lion and grapevine arabesque design between the two roundels. The pair of gourd-shaped sake cups with twisted design in overglaze enamels is also a superb example of a twisted design sake cup with a rare design in which the Shozui style is combined with the old red painting style.
