This Sue ware has the unusual form of a short-necked jar with a base, in which an underbulked pouch is placed between the body and the foot of the base. The middle pouch is openworked on three sides and has three oval ceramic balls (large, medium, and small) inside. The foot is watermarked on three sides in a staggered pattern with a rectangular watermark. This type of jar with a bell base is rarely seen in early Sue ware: but the shape of the base and especially the edge of the base indicates that it was made in the latter half of the 5th century. It is well fired and grayish-black in color, with a dark green natural glaze on one half of the vessel. Judging from the base and glaze tone, it is thought to have come from the Tokai region.
