Insei is said to have trained his pottery skills in Seto, and although he produced many excellent works such as Seto-glazed tea containers, there is no other example of a tea pot glazed with Seto glaze. This tea jar has a sharply twisted outwardly turned mouth with a ball-shaped rim, and the vertical ridges on the four sides of the body are an ingenious feature that is typical of Ninsei. The four sides of the body are vertically ridged in a way that is typical of Insei’s work. The uneven Seto chajiri glaze is applied from the mouth to the bottom of the body, and the clay is visible from the bottom of the body to the bottom of the body. The flat bottom of the bowl has the name “Ninsei” engraved on a nail. After World War II, it was acquired by the Freer Gallery of Art in the United States.
