Height 28.2 cm, mouth diameter 14.9 cm, bottom diameter 12.8 cm
Shigaraki was famous in the early Edo period for making tea pots for the shogun’s household, and this tea pot follows the Shigaraki style. This tea pot is modeled after the Shigaraki style. It has a large mouth with a ball rim, ears on the four sides of the shoulder, and white glaze poured over the mouth and shoulder in a haphazard manner. The body has a wheel-thrown surface, and the clay surface shows a reddish burnished surface, which closely resembles that of the Shigaraki ware. This is one of two Shigaraki tea pots by Insei that have been handed down. The flat bottom is stamped with the large seal of Insei. According to the “Morita Kyuemon Diary,” it is said that Kurotani clay was mixed with Shigaraki-style clay in Kyoto kilns to give a Shigaraki-style flavor, so it may have been made from Kurotani clay.
