Kōrin & Kenzan: hexagonal dish with pine and crane design, iron brownunder glaze

Height: 3.0 cm, Bowl diameter: 24.0 x 27.5 cm
This dish seems to have been made as a counterpart to the “Rokkaku Dish with a Design of Fukurokuju,” and since Fukurokuju is accompanied by a crane, this dish is painted with a crane and a pine tree in the center, both painted in a turtle shell shape, suggesting that it was specially made for celebrations.
While the previous dish has been known since the Meiji period (1868-1912), this dish has been in the possession of a curious person for a long time and has recently become known to the public, making it possible to discover that they are a pair.
Moreover, on the reverse side of the plate, there is an inscription in Kienzan’s own hand stating, “Made by Kienzan in the winter of Hoei Kouta,” which clearly indicates that the plate was made in Hoei 7, when Korin was 54 years old and Kienzan was 48. The cloud arabesques painted on the raised inner and outer sides are the same as in the previous painting.
