Most of the iron-work ceramics jointly produced by Korin and Kenzan are square plates, but some incense burners and fire irons are also known to exist. This hibiya (or incense burner) is one of the best examples. The four sides of the hibiya are decorated with a magnificent landscape and pavilion painted by Korin. However, rather than Korin’s unique style of painting, he may have followed Sesshu’s style, painting a series of landscapes on all four sides with strong brush strokes, and inscribing “Seikorin” on one side.
The entire vessel is thickly molded with low cloud-shaped feet at the four corners of the bottom.
The entire exterior surface and the area from the mouth rim to the center of the interior are covered with a transparent white glaze, but the lower half of the interior and the interior bottom are exposed. The outer bottom is white-lacquered and inscribed “Qianshan” on the base.
