This lid-shaped vessel has the same design as the Shigaraki underglaze blue and gold with pine wave design, but it is boldly designed in the autumnal style, with the use of a variety of glowing gold and silver in all directions. The Shigaraki-style clay is molded into the shape of a basket lid, and then painted with white mud, gouzu, and iron pigments to create an uninhibited glaze. The rhythm of the thick and thin lines of the leaves and ears on the curved surface of the bowl is truly vigorous, and adds greatly to the pleasure of the viewer. The inner surfaces of the lid and body are painted in gosu on a white ground, but the depiction is very poor and contrasts sharply with the beauty of the surface depiction. Yamane Yuzo estimates the author of the design to be Korin, but it is not clear because it is unsigned.
This type of lidded ware was probably a specialty of Qianzan ware, and there are five pieces with matching lids and bodies, as well as several pieces with lids missing and bodies as flat bowls.
