Kannon-ji Temple
This urn was excavated as a warehouse urn from the cemetery in the precincts of Kannon-ji Temple in 1967. It is a long-bodied, short-necked urn with a butt strap stretched over the shoulder and lower half of the body, with a butt strap affixed on three sides from the shoulder to the bottom elevation, and the upper end of the vertical butt strap with ring-shaped ears. The upper end of the vertical band is ringed with a ring ear. It belongs to a series of four-footed vases of the Heian period, but it does not have legs. The clay is grayish-white and dense. It is wheel-thrown, but not very carefully made. The ware is relatively well finished, with a light green ash glaze applied to the entire surface. The body of the vessel is slightly clouded with some flaking. This vase was covered with a 7 cm long-necked ash-glazed jar with a large base (base diameter 13.3 cm). Judging from the clay taste, firing condition, and glaze tone, it is thought to have been produced at the Sanage kiln. This is one of the rare variants of the four-footed jar.
