This flat vase had an extremely flattened body at the end of the Nara period (710-794), but soon after that, it began to take on a larger form when a handle was added to the upper surface of the body and a platform was installed. This vessel was discarded near the fire mouth due to a crack in the body, but it retains its perfect shape. The fine white clay is used to create a stable shape with elaborate wheel throwing and sharp use of the potter’s wheel. The firing process is very good, and the primitive ash glaze on the handle and the upper surface of the body has a yellowish green color due to the oxidized firing. This is one of the representative works of ash-glazed ceramics produced in the Sanage kiln.
