The name “Hōrin” was given by Hōrin, a monk at Kinkaku-ji Temple who was close to Sōtan. According to the inscription on the box by Eizan, “Hōrin, a monk at Rokuon-ji Temple, owned this. Sōtan viewed it three times,” it was likely recommended by Sōtan to Hōrin.
The base is red clay, slightly rounded at the mouth, with a varied mountain path-like rim, a tight waist, and a rounded bottom. Vertical and horizontal grooves are used on the body and bottom. The glaze is a sand glaze unique to Nonkou, which is slightly opaque, with bluish fire marks in places and white unevenness. The foot is made of the same clay as the body, with a stamped mark inside, and the edge of the foot is deeply cut.
