The name “Arashi” (rough shore) was given to this piece because the white snake-like glaze flowing from the waist to the hem resembles the angry waves crashing against the rocks.
This is a shallow tea bowl with a thin body and a narrow waist. It is coated with a jet-black Nonkou glaze, which is not visible on the clay, but the glaze drips down around the rim, forming a snake-like pattern that twists and turns wildly, resembling angry waves.
Although it is a chance creation, the intensity of the glaze is probably the most striking feature of Nonkou, and is the highlight of this tea bowl.
It has a flat foot, a raku seal stamped inside, and a four-eyed glaze color with a hint of amber on the rim.
