The inscription on the lid of the accompanying box, “Kōetsu-style Red Tea Bowl by Raku Kichizaemon,” indicates that this piece is an imitation of a tea bowl by Kōetsu. With its rim cut flat like a mirror, strong vertical grooves along the rim, and a flat interior and bottom, this bowl is likely modeled after Kaga Kōetsu’s style, though its form is sturdier and slightly smaller. The footring is also carved in the Kaga Kōetsu style—low and in a simple circular shape—and three marks remain on the base. The glaze applied over the entire surface has melted well, presenting a vivid reddish hue, and a deep mark is stamped at the lower rim. This piece also dates from the period when the artist went by the name Kichizaemon.
