Ryōnyü: tea bowl with pine, bamboo and plum design, Black Raku

Height: 9.1 cm, Mouth Diameter: 11.5 cm, Foot Diameter: 3.3 cm
This tea bowl is thickly constructed and shaped with a rounded form from the rim to the mid-section.
The bottom is carved into a rounded shape, and a small foot is attached to its center; as a result, when viewed from the side, the bowl appears almost as if the foot has no rise, giving it a stocky, chunky appearance. The lower part of the body is carved with a pine, bamboo, and plum motif, and a thick layer of black glaze is applied, leaving the foot and the area around it unglazed. The clay visible around the footring is white and contains fine sand; the maker’s mark is stamped in two places: on the side of the footring and on the lower body. The lid is inscribed with “Pine, Bamboo, and Plum Black Tea Bowl, Raku Kichizaemon,” accompanied by the maker’s mark. Among pieces bearing this mark, this is likely a work from his late period.
