Tannyü: tea bowl with design of manzai dancer, Black Raku

Height: 8.5 cm, Mouth Diameter: 11.5 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.0 cm
Although its form closely resembles the Black Plum Design Tea Bowl, this is a thin-walled bowl with a deeper flared rim. The foot is slightly lower and more subdued, and the base is flat and narrow. This is a style characteristic of Tannyu. Two Manzai performers are carved on one side of the body; a thin glaze is applied to that section, while the rest of the bowl—except for the foot and its immediate surroundings—is covered in black glaze. Tannyu’s “retired artisan” seal is stamped beside the foot. It comes with its original box; the underside of the lid is inscribed with “Manzai Painting, Black Tea Bowl, Tannyu the 10th, Seal.”
