Keinyü: tea bowl, Red Raku

Height 8.2 cm, Mouth diameter 10.6 cm, Foot diameter 4.4 cm
This tea bowl forms a pair with the black tea bowl, yet it is a contrasting piece with a gentle, rounded form. The rim curves slightly inward, the body is rounded, and the outer rim features fine, fine-grained texture with thick horizontal lines. The foot is small and low, and both the foot interior and the base are flatly carved. Ochre was applied to the foot and the surrounding area, and a milky-white transparent glaze was applied over it; however, because it fired unevenly, this, along with the fire-induced color changes visible beneath the glaze, creates the unique character of this bowl. The side of the foot is carved with “Eleventh Generation Kei-nyu (signature),” and the seal of the retired master is stamped there. As with the black tea bowl, Rokkoku-sai has written the character for “Fuku” (fortune) on the side of the foot.
