This flat tea bowl features a gentle silhouette with a slightly tapered body and a flared lower section.
The footring is large and neatly formed into a perfect circle, with a shallow, swirl-shaped tea pool carved into the interior. The inside and outside of the footring reveal a fine white clay, while the rest of the bowl is coated with yellow clay that retains brushstrokes, topped with a thin, transparent glaze. The exterior displays intense fire-change patterns, interspersed with kiln-change effects, creating a vivid and striking appearance. Inside the footring is clearly stamped the seal—commonly known as the “spiderweb seal”—created by the monk Daikō, which Raku used from the age of 29, when he succeeded his father, until he was 38.
Although Kei-nyū has written “Red Flat Tea Bowl, Raku Kichizaemon Seal” on the lid of the box, this is an excellent example of his early work.
