As Kei-nyu wrote on the lid of the box, “Well-shaped Red Tea Bowl by Raku Kichizaemon,” this tea bowl is modeled after the shape of a well-shaped tea bowl. It is a hand-formed reproduction of a wheel-thrown well-shaped tea bowl and, like the asymmetrical tea bowl shown in Figure 178, is a style unique to Kei-nyu. Tea bowls of this type are generally made thin, and the footring—often seen on bowls bearing the “Chu-in” mark—features a flat, understated design with a folded edge. The ochre applied beneath the transparent glaze has a pale hue, and faint fire-change patterns are visible on the exterior. The interior and exterior of the footring are left unglazed to reveal the clay, and the “Chu-in” mark is stamped at the center of the footring’s interior.
