Kōnyü: tea bowl, known as “Seitai”, Red Raku

Height: 8.0 cm, Mouth Diameter: 11.6 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.7 cm
Like the Red Tea Bowl, Inscription: “Fuku wa Uchi,” this bowl displays Kōnyū’s characteristic style, but it shows much more signs of use compared to the latter. The lower section is carved away to expose the clay, and thick horizontal brushstrokes are applied around the body to break up the thin vertical lines, creating a tight, defined form. The flat, distinct footring is deeply carved on the inside, with the “Hachiraku” seal stamped in the center. Ochre clay was applied around the foot rim, and a slightly thick layer of transparent glaze was applied; however, due to the fire-induced color changes visible on the exterior, the red hue is faint, resulting in a red tea bowl with an overall pale color tone.
Tantansai has inscribed it as “Kōnyū-style Red Tea Bowl, Inscription: Seitō, Room (Seal).”
