Together with oumi, hagashibu is one of the twin peaks of Seto tea caddies, and many masterpieces of Japanese tea caddies were produced. However, most of them were made after the latter half of the 15th century, and therefore, along with oumi, they can be said to be somewhat late as tea caddies.
The box inscription reads, “Mushikui Fujishiro’s famous tea caddy came in the old days,” and the inscription on the back of the box reads, “Came in July of the 13th year of the Kanbun Era. The origin of this item before this date is not known.
The slightly high oral part and slightly rounded shoulders are indicative of the late 15th century period. The sleeves are painted in a fawn mottled pattern, the contrast between black and brown creating a wonderful decorative effect.
